Glossary
Here is a list of terms frequently used with the Under Deck Oasis product.
Projection
The distance from the house wall to the outermost edge of the deck.
Width
The total width of the deck from side to side.
Cantilever (overhang)
The area beyond the support beam, also known as an overhang. These can include house bump-outs, and areas without a supporting post on an outside edge.
Joist
Horizontal support board that displaces the weight of the deck. Attached with brackets and typically set at 12in or 16in intervals.
Hanger
Bracket that supports the vertical load of a deck joist.
Decking
The material (usually wood or composite) installed on top of joists acting as the floor. Typically gapped to allow air flow.
Support Post
Vertical structural that is designed to displace bearing weight of deck above.
Carrier Beam
A horizontal structural element that supports the weight of other beams or joists, acting as the main support and effectively distributing the load of the deck.
Integrated Beam
A horizontal structural element to which the deck joists are attached flush to the top of the horizontal structure. The weight is displaced along the entire length and supporting posts below. These are common for walk-out style decks.
Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL)
is an engineered wood product made from multiple layers of thin wood veneers bonded together with adhesives. It is known for its strength, uniformity, and resistance to warping, making it suitable for structural applications like beams and headers.
Perimeter
Total length around a two-dimensional shape or structure, in this case usually the deck.
Rim Joist/Header
Horizontal board that runs along the outer edge/perimeter of a deck.
Ledger Board
Element mounted horizontally on an existing wall or structure that supports the weight of the deck framing. Generally attached directly to the rim joist of the house framing with lag screws or bolts.
Drain Tile
Underground pipe which channels water away from an area. It has perforations (holes), with stone or gravel surrounding it. Downspouts can be directly connected to control water drainage. Also known as French Drains.
Stairs
Steps provided for vertical movement in construction. Commonly connecting the deck to the ground or two floor levels together.
Landing
A flat platform that connects stairs to the main deck.
Pan-flashing
Durable waterproof barrier without holes used to protect deck elements (such as the ledger board) from water damage.
